In An Effort To Further Influence ML Education Going Forward, Amazon India Has Launched The Fourth Iteration Of Its Machine Learning (ML) Summer School

May 29, 2024
Amazon

The registration dates for the fourth iteration of Machine Learning (ML) Summer School have been released by Amazon India. This immersive program is designed to give students the chance to learn essential Machine Learning skills and technologies from Amazon scientists, preparing them for a career in the field. The dates of registration are set for May 31, 2024, through June 21, 2024. The free educational course will cover eight modules that will provide students the chance to become proficient in important machine learning topics over the course of four weekends in July. With an emphasis on building a solid foundation in both theoretical principles and real-world applications, they include Supervised Learning, Deep Neural Networks, Dimensionality Reduction, Unsupervised Learning, Sequential models, Reinforcement learning, Generative AI and LLMs, and Causal Inference.

All engineering students enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD programs at any accredited Indian institution who plan to graduate in 2025 or 2026 are eligible to apply to the Machine Learning Summer School. After taking an assessment, eligible students will be enrolled in ML Summer School, with the top 3000 students moving on.

“Machine learning has become pivotal in solving customer problems driving a surge in demand for machine learning,” says Rajeev Rastogi, Vice President, International Machine Learning, Amazon. But there is a greater need for ML workers than there is talent in the field. Our goal at Amazon ML Summer School is to close this gap by preparing students for science professions through industry-standard instruction that emphasizes ML competence and applied science abilities. This year, in addition to providing excellent instruction on a broad range of machine learning subjects, we’re also highlighting the importance of an application-driven strategy in preparing talent for real-world problems through practical experience.

Unlike other traditional programs, Amazon’s ML Summer School offers a unique learning experience that combines theoretical concepts with real-world applications. It accommodates students with a variety of ML backgrounds and is in line with academic curricula and current industry trends. Students will have become proficient in important machine learning technologies by the time the program ends.

MLSS 2022 member Prabash Male, who is presently employed by Amazon as an Applied Scientist, shared his thoughts on the event, saying, “Amazon ML – Summer School had a significant impact on my career path in machine learning research.” The summer school sessions provided me with a unique perspective on how the majority of the concepts and methods I acquired in college were being used to tackle large-scale problems throughout Amazon. I was able to obtain an internship with the Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) organization’s Automatic Speech Recognition team thanks to this program. Training large-scale speech models was a hands-on experience I obtained that directly benefited other ongoing projects at Amazon. All things considered, the summer school program gave me a fantastic learning opportunity.

The Amazon Machine Learning Summer School has grown tremendously from its 2021 pilot program. More than 3900 students applied for the first edition, and over 300 of them were selected to participate in the program. Building on this achievement, the program was expanded in 2023 to include engineering students enrolled in any accredited Indian institution. Over 61000 applications were received, with 20,000 women signing up for the course.
