AI-Powered Road Safety Project By IIIT-H and Intel Begins In Nagpur

IIIT-H has been working on multiple such projects with GHMC to ensure road safety through technology is possible and effective.

Understanding the growing concern of road safety and knowing the rise in road accidents in the country, Intel, INAI, IIIT-H (International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad),CSIR-CRRI (Central Road Research Institute), Mahindra & Mahindra, and Nagpur Municipal Corporation(NMC) have all come together for a unique project. So named iRASTE (intelligent solutions for Road Safety through Technology and Engineering), soon beginning in Nagpur.

The project will soon kickstart in Hyderabad with the exact model and start in multiple cities across India. GHMC and IIIT-H has been working on numerous road safety and intelligent road concepts in collaboration with Intel. The project iRaste will showcase the full potential of Artificial Intelligence to change the scenario of current roads by reducing accidents up to 50% and is set to finish by mid-2023.

The project’s biggest aim with the usage of AI is road infrastructure safety and vehicle safety and mobility analysis. Therefore, an advanced Driving Assistance System will be extremely vital in this project. It will alert the drivers about different roads they tread on and how they can drive at different speeds with utmost safety, which will improve performance.

Mobility analysis protects the vehicle by alerting the various blind and accident spots, termed as monitoring road risks. According to Prof P J Narayanan, Director, IIIT-H, Roads, and vehicles are quite an essential part of this country, and so are the pedestrians who have to risk a lot to stay safe from accidents. The latter believe that the AI-powered iRaste can change road safety for the good of pedestrians, commuters, and law enforcement.
