Women Lead One In Every Four Startups At Hyderabad’s AI Firms, Shattering The Gender Stereotype

September 18, 2023

In the world of technology, especially AI research, men predominate infamously. There could be some significant cracks in this glass ceiling because of Hyderabad.

According to data from the World Economic Forum, 22% of AI experts worldwide are women. In Hyderabad, 25% of AI startups may soon have female founders or one out of every four. The current percentage is 22%. Indeed, the comparison is not like for like. But it demonstrates how technology in Charminar City is shattering convention.

The fact that these female-founded firms either secured excellent private investment or were chosen for incubation under the Telangana Artificial Intelligence Mission (T-AIM) makes the tale even more compelling. According to Nasscom data, India is home to almost 3,000 AI startups. “The majority of them have headquarters in Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai. There are about 140 of them in Hyderabad, and according to T-AIM’s Praveen Mokkapati, 30 of them were started by women who are now in the IT industry.

The majority of these female business owners have managerial or technological backgrounds, and they use AI platforms to provide a variety of services, including retail, food security, and self-learning. Zithara Technologies’ creator, Sridevi K Reddy, stated: “Our AI-based solution is specifically addressing this issue. I worked closely with the retail sector in the US. Many middle-level retail chains lose customers because they lack the data tools.

The answer offered by her company wowed the judges of a Telugu TV reality program, who spent Rs 60 lakh. Following this, we started receiving investment offers from other nations as well, Sridevi claimed. Women AI entrepreneurs from various cities are coming to Hyderabad. Pooja HS, the creator of Sacrolife Digital Health Care Technologies, is developing an AI-based analysis tool for women’s reproductive health. “I’ve been employed as manager. I got the concept from something I went through. I decided to develop an AI solution primarily for hospitals engaged in the IVF industry. We’ve lined up a lot of deals. Despite being a Bengaluru native, she declared, “I’m intending to move to Hyderabad shortly.

L Maruti Shankar, CEO of 7 Seas Entertainment and an expert in digital & emerging technologies argues that Hyderabad is unique in the world due to the large number of AI firms that were created by women. How does he see the future? “The day when female AI entrepreneurs in India get the same recognition as female scientists of ISRO is not far off.”
