Reducing risks with Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Technology has morphed into a science fiction in recent times. Processes that can outstate your imagination is already being tested and will become implemental in the next couple of years. The pre-requisite data is already surplus in the public domain.

The technology to enable services like priority messaging, automated disaster alerts, live location tracking, automated SOS messaging, is already is service. Some of them are even available over your cell phone or in the Cloud software which remotely helps in operations. Have you ever thought about how your phone is able to tell you the best route to reach your destination early? Well, this is what the world of data science calls is Artificial Intelligence or AI. Sometimes your phone is even able to detect and show you stuffs that you might be thinking about, without even being asked for it. However, like any other technology, the end result of AI depends upon the purpose to which it is applied.

In spite of all positive implications, we cannot avoid being concerned about how AI can impede privacy corrupt governance and election, power wars and terror. But at the same time, if put to right use, it can save us and our children against natural disasters and risks along with privacy breaches. AI also ensures transparency and efficiency in government proceedings and also contributes in making the world greener and more peaceful.

Moving forward on the positive applications of AI, it is used for humanitarian actions that involves a set of initiatives for hyperlocal disaster warning and advisories as a significant step for building a better and safer world to live in. High-resolution maps and satellite images are especially required for people residing in low-lying areas to know about impending floods or storms with complete precision and at the right time so that they can prepare for disaster management.

AI empowered systems are capable of converting the speed of an incoming cyclone or the cusecs of the incoming flood flow in a river into precise information that shows how and when a particular area or even an individual building will be affected, taking in consideration the condition of the building and the material used in building it. AI can even gauge the proportion of the probable damage and accordingly predict the time and raise the evacuation alert. It can also guide the people with when to evacuate, where to head, what to carry and where to look for support. In coming time, it is predicted, AI will be able to offer you advice on how to strengthen building and infrastructure to avoid future loses and also to about the required preparations to handle the effects of the calamities. Models based on these requirements are already being tested for floods and cyclones and will be soon tested for other hazards like heat waves, earthquakes, epidemics and fires.

It is obvious that the success of AI for such applications depends on human ingenuity that designs, informs and operated them. This is just the first step. It is estimated that the new decade 2020-2030 will see a huge transformation in our lifestyle with the progression of AI as an indispensable part of our daily living. Along with 5G data speeds, higher education standards, better internet coverage, improved infrastructure, well-equipped governance and an active and aware civil society, the evolution of AI will make our lives significantly safer.
