ML Security Research Are Limited To Visual Data! What Went Wrong?

September 23, 2022
ML-Security-Researches-are-Limited-to-Visual-Data-What-Went-Wrong

ML security is of utmost importance as the number of adversarial attacks has considerably increased

Machine learning is basically the method through which computers and smarter machines can be trained without being programmed in a clear and exact way. Most developers are creating software applications using machine learning as a major part of their functionality. ML is used in distinct applications, starting from cloud computing to virtual reality. With the growing popularity of AI, machine learning has also been advancing, but one thing that has got experts constantly worried is the growing security threats towards ML models. ML security is of utmost importance as the rapid deployment of ML models in various fields like finance, healthcare, and transportation has made experts worried that security failures in these fields can have a massive impact on end-users and practitioners. Quite parallel to the increased adoption of ML algorithms and models, the integration of adversarial machine learning has also become quite important, nevertheless, even these models are not safe.

ML applications are witnessing extensive amounts of applications in network data analysis, fraud detection, and spam filtering, which mostly use tubular and text data. And the techniques that ML security researchers used to detect adversarial machine learning attacks against computer vision machines are only limited to these types of data. Unfortunately, the detection of adversarial attacks on these data types has mostly failed to produce strategic and productive approaches to building secure machine learning models.

Adversarial Attacks have Become Common Among Constrained Models

There is already a lot of data to prove that cutting-edge machine learning models are quite vulnerable to adversarial attacks. To explain properly, an adversarial attack is basically a technique that attempts to fool AI and ML models with deceptive data. The most common reason behind causing this kind of attack is to cause a malfunction and hinder pipeline efficiency in machine learning. Based on research conducted by the US National Security of AI, a very small percentage of the research goes into seeking out solutions against adversarial attacks.

Adversarial attacks confuse model inputs that manipulate how ML systems process. These attacks can actually have severe security repercussions in those platforms and applications where ML is used for critical and complicated functions like detecting malicious network traffic. A research team from the University of Luxembourg has been doing research on adversarial ML for several years now and has implicated that in ML models used in the finance and economic domains, an adversarial attacker must be aware of the domain constraints to produce accurate results.

Can scientists improve ML security and stop adversarial attacks?

Adversarial ML researchers claimed that there is immense potential to build robust ML models and improve these techniques. They claim that improving the computational efficiency of adversarial training can enhance the security of machine learning models. ML presents vast opportunities for businesses and scientists are constantly finding new ways to understand the complexities of the domain and create solutions that can help users streamline these tools and reach their respective goals.
