MeitY Wants Cabinet Permission For Rs. Ten Thousand Crore AI Program In India

January 25, 2024
MeitY

For the India AI program, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) intends to request cabinet clearance. The ministry’s action is a major step forward in strengthening India’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. In a public-private collaboration, the idea seeks to create GPU-based servers with a considerable investment of over Rs. 10,000 crore.

The government-formed working groups on AI made suggestions that the AI project is implementing, including the suggestion to build a three-tiered compute infrastructure with 24,500 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). At Synopsys’ software company launch, Minister of Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar emphasized the program’s value and affirmed its proposal for cabinet approval. Synopsys focuses on semiconductors.

This India AI program may use computer infrastructure capacity in both private and public data centers managed by CDAC to function under a public-private partnership paradigm. In addition, Chandrasekhar noted that there is a growing need for GPU-based servers because of their faster data processing than CPU-based servers.

China and the United States currently hold the top positions in the computing infrastructure needed for the advancement of AI technology. By constructing state-of-the-art AI computer infrastructure at five locations and providing 3,000 AI Petaflops of processing capacity, the proposed program seeks to close this gap. This capacity is fifteen times greater than the maximum installed capacity. The working groups suggest building 500 AI PF Edge Compute and 2,500 AI PF Inference Farm systems.

With the National Supercomputing Mission having received an investment of Rs. 1,218.14 crore over the last eight years to establish 24 PetaFlops of compute capability, India has already achieved tremendous progress in supercomputing. A testament to the government’s goal of promoting innovation and technical growth is the new AI initiative.

During the opening of Synopsys’ Chip Design Center, Chandrasekhar stressed the value of innovation and quick advancement made possible by businesses like Synopsys in advancing India’s tech and digital ecosystem. He added that there has been a lot of progress in the semiconductor business and that both manufacturing and innovation are priorities.

The nation’s goals to lead the world in AI and new technologies while promoting innovation and economic growth are in line with the proposed India AI program, which has a significant investment and a strategic approach.
