Interesting ML Algorithms: Diffusion Model, Elastic Net Regularization And Error-Driven Learning

Machine learning teaches computers to behave like humans by providing information from the past and predicting what might happen in the future. Let us see some of the most exciting machine learning algorithms, such as the Diffusion model, Elastic net regularization, and Error-driven learning.

Diffusion model

In machine learning, diffusion models are a type of latent variable model. They are also called probabilistic diffusion models. These models use variational inference to train Markov chains. The diffusion models aim to determine a dataset’s hidden structure by modelling how data points move through the confidential space. In computer vision, images blurred by Gaussian noise are cleaned up by teaching a neural network how to reverse the diffusion process.

Non-equilibrium thermodynamics was the reason why researchers made diffusion models in 2015. Diffusion models are deep generative models that have done well on many different tasks and have a solid theoretical basis. However, although diffusion models have been shown to work better than state-of-the-art methods, they often require expensive sampling procedures and less-than-optimal likelihood estimation. As a result, diffusion models have been improved in many ways.

Furthermore, Diffusion models can be used for many things, such as removing noise from an image, filling in missing parts, increasing the resolution of an image, and making new images. For example, an image generation model can reverse the diffusion process on realistic images it has learned from to create unique natural images from random noise. OpenAI’s text-to-image model DALL-E 2, shown on April 13, 2022, is a recent example. 

Elastic net regularization

In statistics, the elastic net is a regularized regression method that linearly combines the L1 and L2 penalties of the lasso and ridge methods. It is beneficial for fitting linear or logistic regression models.

Elastic net is a regression method that selects variables and makes them more consistent simultaneously. The main idea behind the elastic net is a term called “regularization.” When the model is too well fit, regularization comes into play. Now we need to understand what overfitting is. When a model excels on the training dataset but fails on the test dataset, overfitting takes place. Regularization is a way to reduce errors by fitting a function well in the training dataset. We can call these things “penalties.” There are two kinds of penalties: l1 and l2. The lasso regression model uses the l1 penalty for regularization, and the ridge regression model uses the l2 penalty. As we’ve discussed, the lasso regression model adds a penalty term that is the absolute value of the size of the coefficient. The ridge regression adds the squared coefficient size as a penalty to the loss function.

Error-driven learning

Error-driven learning models have been used extensively to study how animals and people learn for many years. They have also become the most common way to study machine learning, with error-driven learning mechanisms at the heart of the most popular AI apps that use artificial neural networks today. Due to the high complexity of most of these later models, however, theoretical discussions of how we can use error-driven learning tend to focus on improving network architectures. In contrast, the primary learning mechanisms are mostly taken for granted and not given much thought. So, even though error-driven learning mechanisms are used everywhere, they are rarely the subject of theoretical research in the areas where they are used.

Error-driven learning algorithms, which iteratively change expectations based on wrong predictions, underpin many brains and cognitive science models. In the past, they ranged from simple models in psychology and cybernetics to complex deep learning models that now dominate discussions in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Unfortunately, even though this mechanism is used a lot, there aren’t many detailed theoretical analyses of how it works that aren’t based on other theories or specific research goals.
