General Motors Investigates The Use Of ChatGPT-Powered Automobiles

March 18, 2023
Artificial-Intelligence

How would it feel to ride in an electric car with a virtual personal assistant running ChatGPT? Although there have been many impressive applications of AI, incorporating a ChatGPT-like helper into a car is simply amazing. Several automobile manufacturers have always aimed towards a voice-activated user interface for drivers. The capabilities of these cars were increased, though, after the businesses began using cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence technology like “transformer models,” which are capable of learning from enormous amounts of data.

Semafor claims that the world’s largest automaker, General Motors, is turning this fantasy into a reality by embedding OpenAI’s ChatGPT into their upcoming EVs. The choice is a component of their larger partnership with Microsoft Corporation, which earlier this year invested several billion dollars in the ChatGPT. According to Scott Miller, vice president of GM, “ChatGPT is going to be everything,” he said in an interview last week.

These ChatGPT-powered automobiles from GM have more to offer than the majority of cars, which only have a basic voice command capability that allows us to make calls or even adjust the thermostat. Automakers are currently working on AI helpers that are more capable than any of the leading-edge vehicles, according to Scott Miller. People will be able to access information about operating vehicle features through the chatbot, which is typically found in an owner’s handbook. Additionally, it aids in the programming of features like garage door codes or the incorporation of calendar-based schedules.

Customers can anticipate their future vehicles to be far more capable and innovative overall when it comes to developing technology, a GM spokeswoman said on Friday. “This transition is not only about one specific capability like the evolution of voice commands,” the spokesperson added. Expectations are high for this GM endeavor because the ChatGPT can assist customers in several areas, including safety, navigation, maintenance, and fuel efficiency.

In the event of a flat tire, the ChatGPT-powered vehicle will let the driver to request assistance from the vehicle itself. The vehicle will be able to play a tutorial video that demonstrates how to quickly change a tire. If a dashboard diagnostic light illuminates, the digital assistant can also alert the driver with a signal.

GM will employ a ChatGPT-like helper, but Miller hasn’t specifically mentioned which AI model will be employed. As opposed to ChatGPT or BingChat, this AI helper will have a different interface. The firms’ ultimate goal will be to entirely eliminate the concept of “drivers driving the automobile from the driving seat,” as GM already teamed with Microsoft in 2021 to accelerate the commercialization of autonomous cars. So, using a transformer model in the future presents another challenge.

Notwithstanding the objections, this technology will be accepted since it makes driving more enjoyable while also enabling EVs to connect to the digital world. The virtual assistant is also anticipated to keep drivers on the road, limiting accidents to some level as smartphone use while driving is the primary cause of traffic accidents.
