Four New Indian AI Patents That Could Transform Eye Disease Detection And Retinal Care

June 23, 2021
AI Patents

They say that the human eye is capable of revealing what’s happening in one’s body. Changes or alterations in one’s eyes can be an indication of a variety of illnesses, and before advances in medicine were discovered, physicians would assess a person’s health by seeing their eyes. Today, technology is matching wits with humans to help detect illnesses and manage ailments more competitively. Here are some latest patents filed in healthcare, focused on the human eye.

Techniques for identifying blepharoptosis from an image

Patent Filed By: Krishna Vishwesh and Krishna Vrishab

Date: 6th December 2019

The techniques for estimating blepharoptosis from an image of a face are disclosed. The image is captured by a camera. Histogram of Oriented Gradients and Linear Classifiers are used to predict the location of the face and eyes. An Ensemble of Regression Trees is used to detect points on each eyelid and the canthi. The location of the iris is ascertained by thresholding HLS values of individual pixels and applying a sliding window algorithm. Using regression, the eyelid shape curve is approximated. The eyelid shape curve function is used to measure the MRD1 value and distance below the limbus after detecting the Purkinje image/corneal light reflex. Finally, the intensity of blepharoptosis is estimated by categorizing the measured MRD1 and distance-from-Limbus values.

System and method for detecting retinopathy

Patent Filed By: Balaji Mahesh, Gundimeda Venugopal, Jinka Parthasarathi, Rajkumar Joseph, Sambandam Sakthi Indra, Ratan Sundarrajan Murali, Vinayaka Raj – Cognizant Technology Solutions India Pvt Ltd

Date: 3rd August 2018

A system and computer-implemented method for detecting retinopathy is provided. The system comprises an image input module configured to receive one or more fundus images. Further, the system comprises a pre-processing module configured to apply one or more transformations to the one or more received fundus images. Furthermore, the system comprises a feature extraction module configured to extract one or more features from one or more transformed images using one or more Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Also, the system comprises a prediction module configured to determine the stage of retinopathy by classifying the one or more extracted features using pre-stored features, wherein the pre-stored features are extracted from one or more training fundus images by the one or more CNNs and further wherein each pre-stored feature corresponds to a class which is associated with a predetermined stage of retinopathy.”

Method and system for retinal image analysis

Patent Filed By: Ameya Joshi, Kiran Karippath Madan, Bharath Cheluvaraju, Tathagato Rai Dastidar, Apurv Anand, Rohit Kumar Pandey – Sigtuple Technologies Pvt. Ltd

Date: 6th June 2018

The present disclosure discloses a method and system for detecting disorders in retinal images. The method comprises, receiving one or more retinal images. Then, identifying one or more gross pathologies and extracting one or more patches around the one or more gross pathologies. Further, assigning a confidence value to each of the one or more patches and classifying each of the one or more patches as belonging to a label of the set of labels. Further, computing a histogram for each label of the set of labels. Further, generating, a confidence vector for the corresponding retinal image. Further, generating a feature vector by combining the confidence vector generated for each of the one or more retinal images. A value of the feature vector determines the presence and grade of disorder.

Personalized refractive surgery recommendations for eye patients

Patent Filed By: Manish Gupta, Prashant Gupta, Joy Mustafi – Microsoft Technology Licensing

Date: 15th June 2018

Aspects extend to methods, systems, and computer program products for providing personalized refractive surgery recommendations for eye patients. Surgery types and surgery parameters can be recommended for a patient based on predicted postoperative UCVA for the patient if the surgery types and surgery parameters were to be used. Predicting postoperative UCVA can be handled as a regression problem based on patient demography and pre-operative examination details. In an additional aspect, surgery parameters are automatically determined and/or optimized for improved post-operative UCVA by including surgery parameters in a regression model.
