Braintrust Is An AI Firm That Assists Developers In Assessing And Improving Their AI Solutions. Greylock Just Contributed A $5.1 Million Seed Round To The Team

Long before the AI hype cycle began, Ankur Goyal was working in the field.

The repeat creator, who has over ten years of machine learning experience, told Business Insider that he founded his first AI business, Impira, back in 2017.

Goyal joined Impira to head the machine learning platform team after the company was purchased by Figma in the beginning of 2023. However, he continued to encounter the same issue with generative AI models there.Goyal noted that it is frequently difficult to determine the precise cause of a big language model’s stalling or malfunction, therefore engineers are forced to fine-tune or troubleshoot these models by evaluating a wide range of inputs in an attempt to debug the model.

Rather than repeatedly going through this laborious procedure, Goyal made the decision to create AI-powered programs that would help software developers to log, improve, and optimize their AI-enabled products much faster by providing a “toolkit” for doing assessments on these models.

In a round headed by Greylock partner Saam Motamedi, Goyal earned $5.1 million in seed capital after leaving Figma to start Braintrust this summer.

This comes after earlier pre-seed funding from Elad Gil, Basecase CEO Alana Goyal, Goyal’s spouse, and a number of other well-known angel investors, such as HuggingFace CEO Clem Delangue, OpenAI CEO Greg Brockman, Airtable CEO Howie Liu, Lattice CEO Jack Altman, and Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch.

With the completion of this latest fundraising round, Braintrust has raised $8.3 million in total.

According to Goyal, Braintrust assists AI developers by integrating with their cloud workflows and conducting assessments on the code they are building to ensure that it functions properly each time they make changes.

“If we see software engineers integrating Braintrust into their dev loop, they instantly get a sense of what they’ve improved and what is broken,” Goyal stated.

Braintrust sets itself apart by concentrating on “why” something is not working in order to expedite its repair, Goyal added, whereas other businesses concentrate on problems of “observability” or identifying mistakes in their AI workflow.

In addition, Braintrust provides test suggestions and tools for assessing and cleaning up enterprise datasets. Many of the best AI models, including those created by OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Mistral, are compatible with Braintrust’s API, according to the company website.

According to Goyal, many of Braintrust’s clients have informed them that although they developed comparable internal tools, they completely abandoned their own in favor of Braintrust’s since it was so much more effective for evaluations.

Among Braintrust’s current clientele are Instacart, Coda, Airtable, and Zapier.
