Due to its lack of success, Apple is currently dependent on Qualcomm to provide the 5G modem found in iPhones and iPads, despite having been working on an internal 5G modem for some time. Bloomberg claims that the company is developing an internal 6G modem in addition to its ongoing development of an internal 5G variant.
As per the PowerOn newsletter by Mark Gurman, the company has been developing a 6G modem since 2021. With at least 2030 until 6G becomes widely available, Apple will have plenty of time to create, test, and perfect its own 6G technology. In addition to making Apple self-sufficient, this will allow the business greater control over its hardware and long-term financial benefits.
Modems are difficult to design and are an essential part of a modern smartphone that needs to be tested everywhere. The modem is the last component to be made by Apple, which has previously produced semiconductors for Macs, iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and other devices.
Apple is now hiring a cellular platform architect to oversee and manage prototypes, tests, and 6G reference architecture in order to assess 6G technology options.
Qualcomm is the main 5G modem supplier to Apple. Apple and Qualcomm renewed their license in September 2023 despite multiple arguments between the two tech giants, and Qualcomm will continue to supply 5G modems for iPhones until 2026.
With ultra-low latency and greater data transmission rates than 5G, 6G is predicted to be light years ahead of 5G. Theoretically, 6G might offer up to 11Gbps of uplink speed and completely change how we use connected devices like laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
