The media said that Apple has reached out to a few leading news outlets to use their stories as training material for its generative AI systems.
The New York Times claims that the digital giant is reportedly in talks with conde Nast, NBC News, and IAC (owner of People, The Daily Beast, and Better Homes & Gardens) about “multiyear deals worth at least $50 million.”
Citing sources involved with the conversations, the newspaper stated that “Apple has opened negotiations in recent weeks with major news and publishing organizations, seeking permission to use their material in the company’s development of generative artificial intelligence systems.”
The publishers’ reaction seems to be conflicted, and it is possible that they will be held legally responsible for any consequences arising from Apple’s usage of their stuff.
Some news executives, however, expressed optimism that Apple’s strategy would eventually result in a significant collaboration. Regarding its intentions for news and generative AI, the developer of iPhones has reportedly been “vague.”
Apple has not participated in the public conversation about AI. The article noted that in the ten years following its launch, Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, has mainly stayed unchanged. On the report, Apple opted not to comment.
The model libraries and frameworks created by Apple’s machine learning research team to operate on its silicon chips were made available earlier this month. In order to facilitate effective and adaptable machine learning on Apple silicon, the company released MLX, a machine learning framework.
The PyTorch, Jax, and ArrayFire frameworks served as inspiration for the creation of MLX. “The unified memory model is a notable difference between these frameworks and MLX,” writes Apple on GitHub.
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, disclosed last month that the business is making significant investments in artificial intelligence and will do so responsibly for long-term product improvements. Cook stated that almost every product the company ships has AI and machine learning, which are seen as key technology. Additionally, he mentioned that Apple has been working on AI-related projects for a while.
