Ambitious ₹10,372 Crore India AI Program Approved By Cabinet

March 8, 2024
Artificial-Intelligence

The Union Cabinet authorized an AI programme with a corpus of ₹10,372 crore on Thursday, with the goal of amplifying India’s capabilities in AI. The planned initiative, which aims to construct 10,000 GPU-based servers, is built on a strong public-private collaboration paradigm.

This ambitious AI program’s shape has been greatly influenced by the working group of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The establishment of a state-of-the-art AI compute infrastructure with a capacity of 3,000 AI petaflops at five major locations is one of the main proposals.
According to Union Minister Piyush Goyal, this move will improve the capacity of the computer infrastructure in both the public and private sectors, setting the groundwork for a country that is empowered by technology. It is anticipated that the program’s funding infusion will spur innovation, research, and development in the field of artificial intelligence. Large Multimodal Models (LLMs) will also be developed with the help of the grants.

Establishing a sophisticated AI computing ecosystem, creating big multimodal models, advancing AI applications in critical industries, and supporting deeptech AI companies are the objectives of the India AI Programme. As part of the plan, responsible AI projects like developing local frameworks and tools will also be implemented. A government statement outlines this all-encompassing approach, which seeks to promote AI innovation and deployment across several disciplines.

According to Goyal, India intends to establish two or three AI innovation hubs throughout the nation, each outfitted with a Secure Distributed Data Grid. The goal of these hubs is to provide 200/400 Gbps high-speed access to startups, creating an atmosphere that will encourage revolutionary advances in artificial intelligence.

The government’s goal of establishing India as a global AI powerhouse by utilizing the cooperation between the public and private sectors is in line with the proposed AI program. The allocation of ₹10,000 crore signifies a dedication to constructing a robust and long-lasting AI network that can cater to the changing requirements of the country.

Goyal added that Artificial Intelligence will soon be made available to the public as a service by the government, which he claimed will provide frameworks, tools, and innovation to the average person.
