AI And ML Are Being Utilized By The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) In The Fields Of Agriculture And Space

December 16, 2023
Artificial-Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have been embraced by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) over the course of the past three years, which represents a huge step forward in terms of technological innovation. Through his remarks, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the organization’s dedication to maintaining its position at the vanguard of scientific developments in the field of space exploration.

All aspects of space operations, including as Launch Vehicles, Spacecraft Operations, Big Data Analytics, Space Robotics, and Space Traffic Management, will be affected by this move, which covers the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions of all kinds.

Information Processing via Satellite for Precision Agriculture and Other Applications
ISRO’s artificial intelligence efforts are primarily concentrated on the processing of satellite data for a wide variety of applications. These programs aim to modernize several industries, including precision agriculture and agroforestry, by mapping resources, predicting weather, anticipating disasters, and utilizing geo-intelligence. The employment of artificial intelligence in humanoid robots and chatbots is another evidence of the varied strategy that the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is taking to improve space exploration.

Facilitating the Development of Autonomous Operations and Trajectory Design
The incorporation of these technologies into the construction of launch vehicles and spacecraft mission trajectories is one of the most significant undertakings in the field of artificial intelligence. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) intends to make use of autonomous operations in order to pave the way for space missions that are both more efficient and more advanced. It is anticipated that the application of artificial intelligence in the monitoring of health and the prediction of health based on telemetry data will improve the dependability and safety of launch vehicles and satellites.

Innovation through Collaborative Effort amongst Leading Institutions
In the process of developing specialized applications for artificial intelligence, Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the collaborative efforts that have been made by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and famous institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). For the purpose of promoting innovation and ensuring that India continues to be at the forefront of artificial intelligence and machine learning breakthroughs in the space domain, this collaborative approach is crucial.

Applicability of Artificial Intelligence to Earth Observation
A number of applications for Earth Observation have been considerably improved as a result of the implementation of artificial intelligence. These applications include crop yield prediction, weather forecasting, disaster forecasting, and precise land-use mapping. In addition to playing a significant part in urban planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster management, these applications demonstrate the range of the impact that artificial intelligence has had on space exploration.

Major Accomplishments and Results Obtained
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the accomplishments in satellite data analysis while highlighting the real benefits that have resulted from the incorporation of artificial intelligence into space research. Examples of applications include remote sensing, meteorological satellite operations, and communication satellite operations. Some of the most important projects that are gaining advantages from artificial intelligence solutions are the Gaganyaan Program, the Chandrayaan-3 mission, and the operational launch vehicle and spacecraft programs.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is actively participating in cross-center work and cooperation with the corporate sector. In his presentation, Dr. Jitendra Singh detailed the actions that are currently being done, which include the establishment of dedicated artificial intelligence labs, the training of staff through a Skill Development Program, and the organization of AI events at the national level. The purpose of these efforts is to hasten the process of integrating artificial intelligence technology across all ISRO centers and to encourage collaboration for the purpose of advancing space exploration in the future.
