A Strategic Collaboration Between Nokia And The Indian Institute Of Science Aims To Investigate How 6G Might Address India’s Demands

February 24, 2024
IISc

Nokia declared that it is strengthening its 6G commitment to India by collaborating with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to study 6G technologies and application cases that would directly affect Indian society.

In the recently opened Nokia 6G Lab in Bengaluru, Nokia and IISc will collaborate on three main research projects: 6G radio technologies, 6G architecture, and the integration of machine learning into the 6G air interface. In order to add their combined expertise to the 6G technology and standards ecosystem, the partnership will create reference architectures, software frameworks, and algorithms.

Even though Nokia and IISc’s research is international in scope, they will pay particular attention to 6G use cases that deal with issues that are particularly significant to India. Among those usage cases are:

Developing communications technologies that are more energy-efficient and sustainable.
Enhancing networks’ resilience and dependability for vital communications.
Enhancing healthcare, expanding access to education, and enhancing transportation safety are all possible with AI and “Network as Sensor” technology.
Nokia and IISc will contribute to the global 6G ecosystem by concentrating on these use cases, which will help influence the evolution of cellular infrastructure to satisfy the societal needs of large and developing countries like India.

India is now a communications innovation powerhouse on a global scale, leading the way in 6G development. Together, Nokia and IISc hope to advance India’s “Bharat 6G Vision,” which seeks to establish India as a major player in the creation, advancement, and application of 6G technology worldwide.

Nokia’s 6G Lab opened in October 2023 at its Global R&D facility located in Bengaluru. The ground-breaking research facility intends to promote cooperation between Nokia and the academic community in India while expediting the development of core technologies and creative use cases supported by 6G technology. The relationship with IISc is the first of its kind to come out of the lab. It blends the intellectual prowess of India’s top research university with Nokia’s experience bringing cutting-edge mobile technology to a large global audience.

Nishant Batra, Nokia’s Chief Strategy and Technology Officer, stated: “It is impossible to overstate India’s significance in the global telecom arena. To make sure that 6G is a force multiplier for the Indian economy, we are honored to collaborate with the best academic and scientific minds in the country. Working together, we can make Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of becoming India a leader in the development, standardization, and deployment of 6G technology a reality. Moreover, we will make sure that 6G meets the particular requirements of the subcontinent by investigating 6G use cases that are particular to India.

“IISc is very privileged to contribute to India’s mission to be a front-line contributor in design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030, as envisioned in the Bharat 6G Vision document released by the Prime Minister of India,” stated Professor Govindan Rangarajan, Director of IISc.
