Google Is Investing $300 Million In A Competitor To OpenAI’s ChatGPT That Will Emphasise AI Security

February 6, 2023
Google

A ChatGPT rival now has Google funding supporting it.

Google announced a collaboration with the 2021-founded business Anthropic on Friday. Like ChatGPT, Claude is an artificial intelligence chatbot made by Anthropic.

According to the Financial Times, Google will acquire a 10% interest in the business as part of the $300 million deal. Anthropic, on the other hand, receives the necessary cloud computing capacity in addition to a cash boost. The New York Times said that if the acquisition goes through, Anthropic’s value may reach about $5 billion.

Of course, Microsoft is funding OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, heavily. Microsoft would invest $10 billion in the business under an agreement made public last month. Additionally, it made a $1 billion investment in 2019 and a covert $2 billion addition in 2021. The software behemoth intends to integrate OpenAI technology into a wide range of products, including the Bing search engine, potentially upending Google’s position as the undisputed leader in the field.

Some DNA is shared between the two startups. Anthropic was primarily created by a group that left OpenAI after becoming frustrated with its strategic and cultural changes. According to a former employee of OpenAI, while the company’s founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman made lip service to AI safety, “real, true A.I. safety concerns were pushed away” notwithstanding their lip service.

Company for AI safety and research
Anthropic describes itself as “an A.I. safety and research firm” and emphasises its research on “Constitutional A.I.” as evidence of its emphasis on AI safety.

We demonstrate that language models may learn to follow a set of straightforward, natural language rules through self-improvement with the latter, and we apply this novel way to train a more harmless assistant, the company claims on its website.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has issued a warning regarding the risks posed by cutting-edge artificial intelligence. He referred to ChatGPT as “scary good” in December and added, “We are not far from dangerously strong AI.” Additionally, he tweeted that he had “not great confidence” in OpenAI’s security despite the fact that it “started as open-source & non-profit” with his assistance. Both no longer hold true.

Fortune contacted OpenAI for comment but did not immediately get a response.

In contrast, Bill Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft, referred to ChatGPT and other A.I. tools as “every bit as vital as the PC, as the internet.”

Anthropic made Claude available for a small test in January and intends to make it available to more people.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated in a statement, “We’re partnering with Google Cloud to enable the next phase of Anthropic, where we’re going to deploy our AI systems to a bigger group of people.” “This alliance provides us with the performance and capacity we require for our cloud infrastructure.”

We are keen to employ the Google Cloud infrastructure to create trustworthy, comprehensible, and steerable artificial intelligence (AI) systems, he continued.
