Ericsson Research And The Indian Statistical Institute Collaborate On Secure And Dependable Cyber-Physical Systems Research

February 15, 2024

Ericsson Research and the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) will establish a collaborative research center for cyber-physical systems (C-CPS).

In order to promote fundamental and applied research in Sustainable and Trustworthy Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) with a direct influence on implementing AI and CPS in the Indian ecosystem, C-CPS is a virtual, multidisciplinary research center.

During the signing ceremony, Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director of ISI Kolkata, who was the chief guest, stated, “It is anticipated that research on secure and dependable CPS will yield the essential technologies for the next generation of autonomy.” The ISI offers a friendly environment for cooperative translational research, with a constant emphasis on the requirements of emerging technologies. The collaboration ISI-Ericsson research center is warmly welcomed by the institute, which is delighted to work with Ericsson to realize CPS in the era of AI and 6G.”

Dr. Magnus Frodigh, Head of Ericsson Research, elaborates on the connection between the Indian Statistical Institute and the company, saying, “This collaboration strengthens our R&D commitments in India and is pivotal to compute and AI research.” We are eager to collaborate with ISI as a partner and anticipate conducting translational and cooperative basic research for our future network platforms. Dr. Frodigh also discussed Ericsson’s vision for 6G, which aspires to combine the digital and physical realms in order to enhance human well-being through the widespread use of digital twins and sensor-based interactions between people and machines.

“Ericsson has a strong focus on R&D and we believe our research partnerships in AI and 6G with academic institutions will enable us to build a strong foundation for the country’s 6G program,” says Nitin Bansal, Managing Director of Ericsson India. We are the pioneers of 5G, and the goal of our research projects is to develop reasonably priced network systems that will enable ubiquitous access throughout the nation.

The future of R&D lies in industry-academia partnerships, according to Prof. Diganta Mukherjee, Chairperson of ISI’s Cell for Cooperation with Academia, Industry and Research Labs (C-CAIR), who was speaking about the initiative. We are delighted to collaborate on research projects with the industry leader in technology, Ericsson. We anticipate that this Memorandum of Understanding will open up more avenues for collaboration in the fields of data science and machine learning as they relate to 6G communications and both classical and quantum secure communication.

To commemorate the event, a series of discussions and debates were arranged in which executives from ISI and Ericsson Research took part to talk about the opportunities for future joint research as well as the evolution and expansion of current research initiatives. Among the subjects covered in the conversation were secure communication, quantum machine learning, fundamental problems in 5G and beyond, and next generation and energy-efficient AI for CPS ready deployment at the network edge.
