Edge Computing Gets A Shot In The Arm! Artificial Intelligence To Live On Chips

Edge Computing gets a shot in the arm! Artificial Intelligence chips are being developed for enhanced application usage.

Machine learning, in particular deep neural networks, has been instrumental in the growth of commercial AI applications during the past ten years. Early in the 2010s, deep neural networks were effectively implemented thanks to the improved processing power of contemporary computer technology. A new generation of hardware called AI hardware was developed specifically for machine learning applications. The hunt for cheaper and faster chips among computer firms is set to pick up as artificial intelligence and its applications become more common. Alternatively, businesses can lease this technology from cloud service providers. Artificial intelligence (AI) chips, also known as AI hardware or AI accelerators, are specialized accelerators for artificial neural network (ANN) based applications. Deep learning is used in the majority of commercial ANN applications.

An area of artificial intelligence is termed ANN. An approach to machine learning called ANN is influenced by the human brain. It has layers of synthetic neurons that were modeled after how actual neurons behave. A deep network with numerous layers can be used to create ANNs. Deep learning is the term for machine learning applications that use such networks. General-purpose chips can run ANN applications, although they are not the best hardware for this kind of program. As customization is required in many ANN applications, there are many different types of AI chips. Consequently, bringing AI computations to the network edge creates new possibilities for AI applications with new goods and services.

Three components make up an AI chip’s hardware infrastructure: processing, storage, and networking. While processor or computing speed has advanced quickly in recent years, it appears that improvements in storage and networking performance will take some more time. The following are the benefits of adopting AI accelerators over general-purpose hardware:

  • Faster computation: To perform complex training models and algorithms, artificial intelligence applications often need parallel computational capabilities. In comparison to typical semiconductor devices at comparable price points, AI hardware offers more parallel processing capabilities that are thought to have up to ten times more competing power in ANN applications.
  • High bandwidth memory: It is anticipated that specialized AI hardware allots 4-5 times more bandwidth than conventional CPUs. Due to the necessity of parallel processing, AI applications demand much greater CPU bandwidth for effective operation.

Edge AI combines artificial intelligence with edge computing to enable machine learning activities to be executed directly on connected edge devices. A record amount of data created by linked devices needs to be gathered and evaluated in the modern Internet of Things (IoT) age. As a result, massive amounts of data are generated in real-time, necessitating the use of AI systems to interpret the data. Moving the computing duties closer to the network’s edge, where the data is created, is necessary to solve the cloud’s restrictions. Edge computing is the practice of performing computations as close to data sources as is practical rather than on distant, remote sites.

Because edge computing is often implemented as edge-cloud systems, where decentralized edge nodes transfer processed data to the cloud, edge computing is used to extend the cloud.

Edge AI, also known as Edge Intelligence, combines edge computing and AI; it executes AI algorithms on hardware, or the so-called edge devices, and processes data locally. To benefit from quick response times with low latency, more privacy, increased robustness, and better efficient use of network traffic, Edge AI offers a type of on-device AI. Emerging technologies like machine learning, neural network acceleration, and reduction are what are driving the adoption of edge AI. Multiple industries can benefit from the novel, reliable, and scalable AI systems thanks to ML edge computing.

The field as a whole is still relatively young and developing. Edge AI is anticipated to propel the development of AI by bringing AI capabilities closer to the real world. To get beyond the inherent issues of the traditional cloud, like high latency and a lack of security, edge computing enables moving AI processing duties from the cloud to close to the end devices.
