Battles In The Chatbot Search Arena Have Just Started

February 11, 2023

This week, the biggest search businesses in the world launched a competition to control a potent new class of “generative AI” algorithms.

The most notable Microsoft announcement was that it is rewiring Bing, which is somewhat less popular than Google, to use ChatGPT—the crazily well-liked and frequently shockingly effective chatbot created by the AI startup OpenAI.

If you haven’t been living in space for the past few months, you might not be aware of how crazy people are about ChatGPT’s capacity to respond to queries in a stunningly clear, seemingly perceptive, and original manner. Do you wish to comprehend quantum computing? For whatever is in the fridge, do you need a recipe? Having trouble writing that high school essay? ChatGPT is there for you.

The brand-new Bing is also talkative. Demonstrations the company conducted at its Redmond headquarters and a brief test drive by WIRED’s Aarian Marshall, who was present, demonstrate that it can easily generate a travel itinerary, highlight the salient features of product reviews, and provide complex answers, like whether a piece of furniture will fit in a particular car. It’s a far cry from Microsoft’s helpless Office sidekick Clippy, which some readers may remember bugging them whenever they generated a new document.

Not to be outdone by Bing’s AI revamp, Google announced this week that it would introduce Bard, a ChatGPT rival. (One Googler tells me that the name was chosen to highlight the innovative nature of the algorithm below.) Like Microsoft, the business demonstrated how the underlying technology could respond to some web searches and announced that it would begin making the chatbot’s AI available to developers. The thought of being overtaken in search, which generates the majority of parent Alphabet’s revenue, has evidently unnerved Google. And given that its AI experts created both the machine learning algorithm, known as a transformer, at the centre of ChatGPT as well as a crucial method used to create AI imagery, known as diffusion modelling, they may be understandably a little miffed.

Baidu, the largest search engine in China, is last but certainly not least in the new AI search wars. It entered the race by unveiling Wenxin Yiyan (), sometimes known as “Ernie Bot” in English, another ChatGPT competitor. The bot will be made available, according to Baidu, once internal testing is over in March.

These new search bots are illustrations of generative artificial intelligence (AI), a movement propelled by algorithms that can create text, write computer code, and conjure up images in response to a cue. Although there may be significant layoffs in the tech sector, interest in generative AI is increasing, and venture capitalists (VCs) envision entire businesses being rebuilt around this new creative streak in AI.

By making it simpler to find helpful information and guidance, generative language tools like ChatGPT will undoubtedly alter what it means to browse the web, upending a sector worth hundreds of billions of dollars yearly. Less clicking on links and studying websites may replace web searches in favour of leaning back and relying on chatbot recommendations. Equally crucially, the underlying language technology might also revolutionise a wide range of other tasks, possibly leading to spreadsheets that can gather and summarise data for you or email programmes that can compose sales pitches. Many users believe that ChatGPT also portends a change in AI’s capacity to comprehend and interact with humankind.

Of course, there is a catch.

The AI algorithms powering ChatGPT and its new cousins may make the text they spew at us appear human, but they do not operate remotely like a human brain. By ingesting statistical patterns in massive amounts of material from the web and literature, their algorithms are specifically created to learn to predict what should happen after a prompt. They have no idea if what they are saying is accurate or whether a response is biassed, inappropriate, or representative of the real world. The fact that these AI tools create text only based on patterns they have already seen makes them vulnerable to “hallucinating” information. In reality, a strategy used by ChatGPT that involves human feedback on questions contributes to some of its strength; nevertheless, this input optimises for responses that seem persuasive rather than ones that are correct or accurate.

If you’re attempting to use the technology to increase the usefulness of web search, these issues might be a problem. We tried tripping up ChatGPT in Bing a few times, and it appears that Microsoft has corrected a few typical bugs. However, the real test will come when it is made generally available. Google has proudly shown one Bard response that falsely asserts that the James Webb Space telescope was the first to get an image of a planet outside of our solar system. Oops.
