Galactica Is An Artificial Intelligence-Powered Academic Paper Writing Tool That Meta Presents

November 30, 2022
meta

One is a tough activity, especially writing that involves research. But what if AI is able to lend a hand in this matter?

Recently, Meta released a demo version of their new artificial intelligence tool known as “Galactica,” which has the ability to summarise academic material, solve mathematical problems, generate articles similar to those found on Wikipedia, and more.

Galactica is responsible for carrying out all of this work by providing the language model with straightforward text prompts. According to the website Galactica.org, its models are trained on a vast corpus that includes more than 360 million in-context citations and over 50 million unique references that have been standardised across a variety of sources. Because of this, Galactica is able to make citation suggestions and assist in the discovery of works that are linked.

As a result of their training on an innovative and high-quality scientific dataset known as NatureBook, the models are able to operate with scientific jargon, mathematical and chemical equations, and source codes.

Producing Scientifically Validated Works
The user is tasked with entering a series of prompts for nearly any subject, after which the AI will compose articles and explanatory videos on the subject. On the screen, there is a button labelled “Generate More” that you can click. The artificial intelligence will continue to add new content to the paper if the user selects this option.

Depending on the length of the paper, completing this work manually would need a significantly longer amount of time.

Text quality
Textual quality is still up for debate at this early stage of development. The final product may have benefited from the expert level of writing that a professional would have provided. The research community, on the other hand, claims that the model does a respectable job when applied to scientific literature.

If the correct cues were used, the document’s presentation may be significantly improved. Including the appropriate questions in a prompt can result in the generation of an entire research paper from scratch. These will arrive complete with the references and formulas that are essential to the process of academic writing.

Don’t trust blindly
Meta advises its customers to use caution before placing their faith in Galactica. Students could use them to gain an advantage over the people they have been assigned to do work for. According to the business, some of the text that is generated by Galactica may give the impression of being very authentic and quite confident, yet it may really contain significant inaccuracies. This is especially true for material that is quite technical in nature.

When it comes to the majority of the information that is generated by AI, just a small amount of fresh and original content can be produced. This is due to the fact that these models rely on previously accumulated knowledge to generate content.

Yann LeCun, Chief AI Scientist at Meta, has also provided an explanation, “In the same way that driving assistance is to driving, this tool is to writing papers. It will not write your papers for you automatically, but it will significantly lessen the mental strain required on you while you are doing so.”

The model will only be capable of performing some of the tasks, but it will be able to perform the majority of the tasks. The language is still fairly disjointed, as demonstrated by the example that is provided on the demo website; consequently, a teacher will probably be able to tell if a student is making use of such a system.
